Marcia Slow-Sandler
Director of Community Relations and Group Sales
Always a Racing Season at Mardi Gras Casino Hollywood Forida
Marcia Slow-Sandler was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and in 1978 relocated to Pembroke Pines, Florida, with her husband Herb and their two sons Howard and Eric.
In 1987 when the Hollywood Greyhound Track racing dates were from December to April, she became the Event Coordinator. After recently retiring from the Hallandale Police Department Marcia found working at the track a definite change. The hustle and bustle of the crowds and the excitement of the races brought her new challenges. Eventually the racing season was extended through June. The additional racing dates gave Marcia the opportunity to bring new events to the track. One that she is most proud of was a race that benefited local charities called the Mutt Derby. She still smiles as she remembers the owner's dismay as their "Mutt" ran backward, or jumped off the track, sat down and watched the other dogs go bye. Her absolute favorite, however, was the poodle that just refused to move.
2006 was a new beginning for the Hollywood Greyhound Track. After a long and grueling campaign to allow slot machines in their facility, it became the Mardi Gras Casino. When the Hollywood Greyhound Track opened its doors in December, it had a new name and Marcia had a new title. She became the Director of Community Relations and Group Sales a title that she still holds today.
Inspired by Angela Lansbury's TV portrayal of Jessica Fletcher, the crime-solving author, Marcia decided to follow her footsteps "in real life." After her husband died, Marcia's hobby of mystery writing began in earnest. To bring her characters to life and to add authenticity to her plots, Marcia draws from a wealth of personal experience acquired from her years of serving both the Pembroke Pines and Hallandale Beach Police Departments as Crime Watch Coordinator and Public Information Officer.
She has received numerous awards throughout her career. In 2009, she was inducted into the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame. Still actively working and writing, she is surrounded by her loving children and the "Sunshine of her Life", her granddaughter, Nicole.
